HPC Internship – Danish Refugee Council

BACKGROUND
The Danish Refugee Council (DRC) has been providing relief and development services in the Horn of Africa since 1997. Using a protection of human rights framework, DRC has mainly focused on Somalis who are displaced by conflict. Programmes include protection, livelihoods, food distribution, water and sanitation, emergency relief and advocacy amongst others. There are 6 main country offices in the region: Kenya, Somalia, Ethiopia, Djibouti, Uganda and Yemen, and the regional office in Nairobi. Inter-Agency Working Group is a regional programmes, which are supported from the regional offices.

ROLE PURPOSE
As part of the IAWG Team you will be responsible to the Inter Agency Working Group (IAWG) Secretariat, mainly supporting the communication function of the upcoming Humanitarian Partnership Conference 2016. The position will also work closely with IAWG Coordinator as well as the HPC Steering committee in organising the conference.

KEYS AREAS OF ACCOUNTABILITY
Outreach and profile raising of the conference through;

Development of the conference communication strategy
Update the conference social media platforms on a regular basis with relevant materials, highlighting key events and achievements using blogs etc.
Development of a HPC newsletter post conference
Mobilization of participants and presenters – linking up with the various institutions/stakeholders including the UN, Academia, INGO, NGOs, CBOs, The Red Cross, Government, regional bodies, private sector among others
Take notes of the steering Group meetings
Support in design of the HPC programme and liaison with the printing firm
Send out general as well as individual conference invites and keep in email contact with invitees.
Liaison with the conference venue to ensure that all is ready for the conference start.
Support the coordinator in managing all the administrative and logistic arrangements of the upcoming conferences

QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in running conferences or events
Excellent interpersonal written and oral communication skills;
University degree in the field of communications, public relations, languages, journalism A MUST
Experience in managing websites and in using social media tools in a professional context
Competent IT skills and experience of using email and Internet
Demonstrated experience in events coordination, administration and/or management, preferably within INGOs.
Pro-active communicator, with experience working in multi-disciplinary teams
Resourcefulness, flexibility, good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise and to meet deadlines.
Experience and skills in the use of software programs such as MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Adobe suite 6 – A MUST
Demonstrated effective organizational skills and ability to handle work in a timely manner
Ability to work effectively with people from different nationalities, cultures, ethnic and religious groups across the region
Good understanding of humanitarian issues in East and Central Africa, and the ability to relate IAWG work within this context.
