Summary: Nairobi Hospice is a registered charitable non–profit making organization established in 1988 and officially opened in February 1990. It was the first of its kind in East Africa.
Nairobi Hospice cares for and supports patients and families facing life limiting illnesses. Services are provided at the Hospice on an out-patient basis in hospitals and at the patients’ homes within a 20km radius together with a weekly day-care service.
They are looking to recruit a Chief Executive Officer to provide strategic leadership towards the accomplishment of the organization’s mission and attainment of its goals.
Job Purpose: To provide strategic and inspiring leadership at the Nairobi Hospice that ensures the attainment of its mandate as well as its overall growth and sustainability. The position reports to the Board of Directors.
Key Deliverables:
Approved strategic plan and its successful implementation
Sustainable fundraising strategy that facilitates the delivery of the approved strategy
Well run Hospice with appropriate structures, systems, processes and staff
Partnerships developed and/or strengthened that promote the Hospice’s agenda
Appropriate positioning of the Hospice
Key Responsibilities
Develop, continually review and effectively implement a strategic plan for the Hospice that facilitates the attainment of its mandate; this includes guiding departmental heads in the development of annual workplans aligned to the strategy
Ensure financial sustainability through long term planning including a sustainable fund-raising strategy for the Hospice and the maintenance of appropriate relationships with financiers and donors
Develop partnerships with various parties in the public and private sector, communities, etc that are aimed at enhancing service delivery
Network effectively within and outside the sector with the aim of influencing national policy and programmes that impact our stakeholders
Lead in the development of a communication strategy that leverages the Hospice’s brand and its ethos and appropriately positions the Hospice among its stakeholders
Develop/guide the development of organisation structures, operating systems and process aimed at ensuring effective resource management, efficient service delivery and timely and accurate reporting.
Manage the overall performance of the Hospice through effective monitoring of the core activities and/or projects, and provision of periodic reports to the Board of Directors and other stakeholders as necessary
Lead the Hospice’s new initiatives including their identification, cost benefit analysis, their resourcing and effective execution.
Participate in Board meetings as an ex-officio member and communicate Board decisions appropriately to the Hospice staff and other relevant stakeholders
Effectively manage the staff, including sourcing, training and development, performance management and their motivation.
Job Specifications
Degree or equivalent; post graduate studies is a plus as is a medical qualification
10 years’ working experience; at least 3 years experience in senior management, preferably in palliative/home based care.
A demonstrable passion for development/social work is a definite requirement
Proven experience of strategy development and implementation
Experience in operational systems development and implementation
Experience in turnaround highly desirable.
Strong communication skills; experience of brand building and/or promotions, public relations etc would be an advantage
Strong interpersonal skills that include relationship building and maintenance, networking, etc.
