icipe – the International Centre of Insect Physiology and Ecology – is an international research organisation focused on African insect science for food and health.
Its mission is to alleviate poverty by ensuring food security, improving health, protecting the environment and building the capacity of researchers and communities across the developing world.
icipe has over 450 staff to support its research and capacity building programmes located at various sites in Kenya and Ethiopia, and projects in a number of countries across Africa.
icipe wishes to recruit a suitable person to fill the position of Communications Officer in the Office of the Head of Communications.
The position is tenable in Nairobi, Kenya at the Duduville campus.
This is a two-year contract that is renewable.
Overall Purpose of the Job: To strengthen staff understanding and capacity on internal and external communications, enhance icipe’s visibility and credibility as a centre of excellence, and strengthen and diversify icipe’s communications products.
Specific Duties:
Support staff to undertake rapid assessment to determine the communications gaps, areas of improvement and assessment of the communication status at icipe.
Identify priority areas for immediate and midterm action based on the assessment.
Collaborate with the Director General in developing appropriate in-house capacity, and as necessary, support the identification of external service providers to build the capacity of staff on communications as an important organisational component.
Support the development and implementation of new information sharing strategies and channels.
Support the development of a constant and seamless brand and message management.
Mentor and coach staff on the implementation of the communications strategy.
Recommend and support the diversification of communication products.
Make recommendation on the ideal communications capacity for icipe’s communications set up.
Knowledge Required for Performing the Job
Experience in managing new media and digital channels, including website development and social media.
Requirements / Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism or other relevant discipline.
Two years of experience in communications, journalism or relevant field.
Other desirable attributes
Excellent interpersonal skills
Demonstrated understanding of research and development (R&D) related issues.
Reporting: This position reports to the Head of Communications.
The selected candidate should be available to start as soon as possible.
