Documentation Of Success Stories For The Electoral – Act Change Transform

1.0 Introduction
Act Change Transform (Act!) is a non-governmental organization working in the field of Capacity Development and Grants Management. Act! together with its implementing partners has contributed to country’s results in peace building and conflict transformation, democracy and human rights, livelihoods and environment and natural resource management
Under the Democracy and Human Rights Program, Act! is currently implementing the Electoral Conflict and Violence Mitigation Program (ECVMP) aimed at improving the capacity of National and County level peace structures for effective prevention and response to electoral related conflicts in the counties where the program is being implemented. The Counties include: Garissa, Lamu, Tana River, Kwale, Kilifi, Mombasa, Nairobi, Marsabit, Meru and Isiolo.
To better raise public awareness of our work, strengthen our partnerships and improve advocacy efforts in elections and conflict management work, Act! seeks to engage the services of a qualified consultant to document success stories that captures our key results, activities, successes and challenges as well as future direction.

2.0 Objective
The overall purpose of the assignment is to document success stories that provides a clear and compelling narrative on the efforts made by the various elections actors in effectively and efficiently mediating and preventing possible conflicts in the run up to and after the August 8 elections.
Specifically, the success/impact stories will highlight the following;
 The impact of the program in promoting peaceful elections.
 The role of Act!’s local peace structures – the Conflict Management Panels (CMPs) in mitigating and addressing electoral related conflicts at the County and Sub-County levels in the programs’ target Counties.

The role that women played in fostering peaceful co-existence at the grassroots level, how conflict impacted their livelihoods during the electioneering period and mechanisms that can be put in place to address violence against women during the electioneering periods.
 Constructive engagement of the youth in promoting safe and peaceful communities in Kenya
 Role of community peace structures including council of elders, religious leaders in fostering peace in the run up to and after the 2017 general elections.
 Awareness creation through mass media i.e radio talk shows and TV in mitigating electoral conflicts during the entire electoral cycle.
 How the program used different actors to coordinate and respond to conflict situations during the campaigns period and in the aftermath of the August general elections.
3.0 Specific tasks for the Consultancy
In order to achieve the envisaged objectives, the consultant under the overall supervision of Communications Specialist and with the support from the program teams across the counties will:
 Determine the exact scope of the stories; identify and develop topics and agree on communities to be visited for interviews.
 Develop tools and formats that will be used for documenting the stories in line with the USAID guidelines.
 Participate in site visits with program officers across the counties for FGDs and key informant interviews
 Document and draft success stories for the ECVMP project that highlights the successes and impact.
 Capture photographs that will accompany the success stories as well as capture the achievements of the project.
4.0 Methodology:
The exercise will involve site visits to the 10 Counties where ECVMP is being implemented, key informant interviews with both secondary and primary beneficiaries as mentioned above.
5.0 Expected Outputs and Deliverables
The consultant will deliver to Act! the following:
 Inception statement detailing how they intend to carry out the documentation; tools, work plan and budget
 Write ups of key stories documented;
 A photo album (maximum 20 high resolutions photos in JPEG format) of each of the impact/stories documented well captioned

Present draft stories for review and finalize them based on the feedback received

6.0 Expertise Required and Qualification
To be eligible to apply for this role the consultant/s must;
 Hold a degree in a relevant field: Communication, Journalism, Media studies, Fine Arts. Other team members where applicable should also hold relevant qualifications in any of these areas.
 Demonstrate experience in undertaking similar assignments by use of samples of completed work.
 Knowledge in conflct sensitive and gender sensistive reporting or writing
 Have good knowledge of multicultural aspects in Kenya, cultural nuances, gender and crosscutting issues.
 Three to five years of professional experience in documenting investigative and human impact stories.
 Possess excellent communication skills-fluency in oral and written English Previous proven experience in documenting donor supported projects.
 Clear articulation of capacity and skills, and innovative approaches to carry out the assignment; as well as ·a Clear work plan and articulation of expected methodologies and outputs within the tight timeframe
 Ability to start immediately
7.0 Duration and timing of services
The assignment is expected to take 30 working days from the date of signing the contract.

All logistical costs (accommodation, travel and daily allowance will be borne by Act!
