Infant and Young Child Nutrition (IYCN) Consultant – Nairobi – Food and Agriculture Organization

Under the overall supervision of the FAO Somalia Representative, and under direct supervision of the FSNAU Chief Technical Adviser (CTA) and in close coordination with members of the FSNAU Nutrition Team, the IYCN Consultant will lead and coordinate the implementation of a country-wide Infant and Young Child Nutrition (IYCN) study in Somalia and prepare the survey report.
Specifically, he/she will develop formative IYCN research protocol, lead and coordinate implementation of IYCN survey and analyze IYCN survey data and report on survey findings.

Specific Functions
• Review relevant literature and materials on IYCN and develop preliminary survey protocol
• Coordinate with FSNAU nutrition team members, UNICEF and Federal Ministry of Health in reviewing and finalizing the survey protocol.
• Submit survey protocol to ethical review committee and finalize based on feedback received.
• Travel to different regions to train and meet with collaborators and research team for study implementation in different field offices for FAO Somalia and orient and train regional survey teams
• Test and modify study instruments
• Review transcripts and modify guidelines if needed
• Initiate data collection, coordinate supervision of data collection, conduct data cleaning and analyses and develop IYCB recommendations based on key survey findings and resent preliminary findings to key stakeholders.
• Write-up survey findings in a IYCB draft survey report and share draft IYCN survey report with FSNAU, UNICEF and Ministries of Health for review and validation of results.
• Finalize and submit to FSNAU the IYCN survey final report based on feedback received from stakeholders and disseminate the IYCN survey final report after clearance.
• Perform any other duties as may be assigned.Minimum requirements Education:
• Master’s degree in nutrition/MPH/social sciences or anthropology

Work Experience:
• A minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible work experience in research on nutrition and public health, including the design and implementation of IYCN surveys
• Proven experience in leading qualitative studies commended to be trustworthy and credible
Technical Competencies
• Demonstrated ability in the design and implementation of IYCN surveys
• Extent of knowledge of nutrition data analysis using statistical techniques (e.g. ENA, SPSS/STATA, etc) and qualitative skills (e.g. focus group discussion and participatory assessment techniques)
• Experience in working – under strict dead lines
• Supervisory and coordination experience especially in dealing with teams of professionals from different background
• Quality communication, writing and presentation skills in English
• Knowledge of current developments in the fields of formative research, behavioural sciences and public nutrition.
• Proven ability to lead research teams
• Proven ability to conceptualize and plan.
• Ability to express clearly and concisely ideas and concepts in written and oral form.
• Work experience in sub-Saharan Africa

Languages:
Working knowledge (level C) of the FAO official language used for communication within the country (English, French or Spanish) and working knowledge of the local language(s) is required.

IT Skills:
Ability to effectively use standard office software, such as MS Office (Windows, Word, Outlook, Excel, Exchange) etc. Ability to use accounting software and other information systems and databases to insert data, make enquiries, retrieve/define ad hoc reports and analyses and edit results in appropriate format.

Office Management Skills:
Systematic, well-structured and efficient approach to work assignments. Analytical ability, accuracy and consistency. Exercise diligence and care in dealing with records and expenditures.
Interpersonal Communications and Teamwork Skills:
The incumbent must possess a cooperative spirit, flexibility and openness to work in an international environment. Tact and courtesy. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with people of different national and cultural background.
