Practical Action is a people centred international non-governmental development organization that promotes the use of appropriate technology to alleviate poverty. Practical Action has vast experience working across the East African Region. Our presence dates back to 1993. Our work in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) has been undertaken under the international programme on Improving Access to Infrastructure Services. In Kenya, we work in and around, Lake Victoria, Nairobi, Nakuru, and Northern Kenya. We have worked with poor people in urban slums and remote rural areas of Northern Kenya to have better access to safe water for health and productive uses.
Background to the consultancy assignment
Over 50 % of Kisumu’s 600,000 residents live in deprivation and 80 % are tenant householders. Fewer than 30 % have adequate toilets and open defecation is widespread (Practical Action, 2014). Slum-dwellers’ demands for better sanitation infrastructure and services fail to influence landlords or authorities. Enterprising residents dig and empty their own pits; some earning incomes by offering these services to others, but standards are extremely poor and practices dangerous. The results of non-governmental organization such as Kisumu Urban Apostolate Programme (KUAP) and Umande Trust to effect change are promising, but limited by their organizational capacity. Human waste seep into drinking and flood-waters cause a public health hazard, spreading water-borne diseases and degrading the environment. Children under 5, women of reproductive age, people living with disabilities and HIV/AIDS are most affected. This project is designed to trigger the delivery of safer, healthier and better futures and enhance the voice of marginalized slum-dwellers in Obunga and Nyalenda informal settlements.
Practical Action and its partners; Kisumu Urban Apostolate Programme (KUAP) and Umande Trust are looking for a qualified consultant to carry out a baseline study to inform the project implementation in Nyalenda and Obunga Settlements in Kisumu City, Kisumu County. The overall purpose of the baseline study is to develop bench marking indicators and provide detailed information on the two settlements.
