Background
The National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC) was formed after the 2007/2008 post-election violence, to enhance social cohesion between communities living in Kenya. Its main mandate is to address any form of discrimination on persons based on race, religion and ethnicity background.
Interpeace is an independent, international peacebuilding organization and a strategic partner of the United Nations. Interpeace was created by the United Nations in 1994 and became an independent organization in 2000 while maintaining a unique partnership with the UN. Interpeace is headquartered in Geneva and its regional office for Eastern and Central Africa in Nairobi, coordinates peacebuilding programmes in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Kenya, Rwanda and the Somali region.
The NCIC and Interpeace are jointly spearheading a pilot peacebuilding project in Mandera County, Kenya. The NCIC/Interpeace pilot project aims to engage the entire population in an effort to bridge their differences and to develop community structures that will sustain long term peace and coexistence among the various communities living in Mandera.
NCIC and Interpeace are seeking to fill the following positions for Project officer- Lead researcher -Audio Visual to be based in Mandera town but with frequent travels within the county. The holder of the position will be contracted by the NCIC/Interpeace Peacebuilding programme for the period ending 31st December 2017 with the possibility of extension.
Scope of Work
The AV Researcher will film the debates and interviews, produce and edit the research of audio and video discussions in the form of video materials, which represent and reflect the views of the population without bias or partisan trends, observed realities and main ideas that emerge from the research. The AV Researcher will lead the NCIC-Interpeace AV Research section of the peacebuilding team of the pilot project. S/he will support NCIC-Interpeace’s institutional capacity on the use of Audio-visual research tools for the peacebuilding initiatives in Mandera County. S/he will report directly to the Peacebuilding Coordinator and together with the coordinator s/he will develop work, which will be and include all the team activities. On the programme level s/he will work with Lead Researcher/Facilitator to ensure the coherence of both the written report and the AV report. S/he is responsible for supporting the team leaders in ensuring that the community consultative process is fully captured in a coherent, well-planned manner, and in line with the Lead researchers reporting design.
Key Responsibilities
The Audio-Visual researcher is responsible for managing all audio-visual activities of the peacebuilding team in Mandera County. S/he is tasked to:
Ensure the safety and proper utilization of all Audio-visual equipment’s under the custody of the AV department.
Lead the AV team and use audio-visual tools to film the debates and interviews, as well as produce and edit research results in the form of video materials.
Coordinate the audio-visual research during all community consultative processes and document proceedings with high level integrity, without bias or partisan trends, observed realities and main ideas that emerge from the research
Collect, archive and store safely all AV recordings for future enrichment of the peacebuilding research.
Organize and prepare projections of venues for the AV research material during information dissemination and distribution of films;
Organize, categorize and enhance archive footage and edited documents;
Perform other duties assigned to him by his superior.
In Collaboration with the other researchers, s/he will plan and execute all the video and audio coverage for the field.
Minimum Qualifications
A Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, mass media and communication or higher.
Must have a minimum of 5 years of professional experience with international or national organizations, implementing development programmes and peacebuilding projects.
At least 3 years of relevant field experience in media, Audio-visual recording, editing raw films into finished audio-visual production.
Good general knowledge of the context in Mandera County, as well as national and regional conflict dynamics.
Good demonstrated knowledge and practical skills in videos, as well as the realization of audio-visual products and production.
Have a mastery in the use of professional audio-visual tools and photography.
Highly competent in the use of Mac computer and Final Cut Pro X editing software.
Have a good aptitude for IT solutions and ICTs.
Good mastery of English.
Good command of the local languages of the people of Mandera County will be an added advantage.
