Heshima Kenya is a non-profit organization based in Nairobi, Kenya and dedicated to identifying, protecting, and empowering unaccompanied refugee children and youth, especially adolescent girls, through our specialized shelter, education, and advocacy programs. The Maisha Collective, an income-generating initiative of our education program, the Girls’ Empowerment Project, serves as an economic springboard to help program graduates become skilled artisans who design, produce, and market a line of unique hand-dyed scarves and other textiles. Through the Mifuko Project, refugee artisans in Kakuma refugee camp will develop and produce a refugee-made product line that is produced, marketed, and sold through Heshima Kenya, so that refugee artisans gain access to a sustainable market, earn income, increase their opportunities for self-reliance, and bring about greater empowerment for refugee women within their communities.
The Mifuko Project Officer is responsible for the overall production, training, and operations of the Mifuko Project in Kakuma. The position will report directly to the Maisha Operations Manager who is the overall Coordinator of the Maisha Collective.
Core Responsibilities:
• Oversee designing of the bags, making/ production of the bags and quality control of handmade product line by refugee artisans in Kakuma & Kalobeyei;
• Conduct or assist in conducting specialized trainings for the groups;
• Prepare weekly, monthly, and project progress reports;
• Liaise with and update Nairobi and US staff on the project progress as necessary;
• Ensure all artisans/ beneficiaries are building transferable group development, management, and leadership skills to carry out production;
• Provide the groups with guidance on sustainable production systems and quality assurance standards;
• Establish and adhere to production schedule, taking into account ethical and fair trade standards, as well as health and safety guidelines;
• Establish, maintain, and manage Mifuko Project inventory management system;
• Overall coordination of the project and leadership.
Qualifications:
• First degree or Higher Diploma in Project Management or other related field, with 3+ years of strong experience in design and production of bags or textile goods
• Skilled in project reporting and inventory management
• Ability to work cross-functionally with team and manage concepts from beginning to end
• Excellent oral and written communication and organizational skills
• Demonstrated flexibility to adapt to changing requirements
• Previous experience working with international clients and global market preferred
• Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office, including Excel, and Skype; knowledge of Square space or other website platform preferred
• Passion for and understanding of the needs and potential of the unique population served
• Must be a Kenyan citizen of unquestionable character, integrity and moral standing.
