Experts in Soil Protection and Soil Rehabilitation – Nairobi – AFC Consultants International

National long term experts to be based in: Siaya, Kakamega, and Bungoma as part of a tender procedure to select a company to implement Soil Protection and Soil Rehabilitation in Western Kenya.

Main tasks for each expert:
Implementation soil conservation and rehabilitation measures in close collaboration with local government and private service providers (mainly advisory services) and local water user groups and other initiatives (group-based approaches)
Support the County authorities in the field of agriculture and NRM in the design and implementation of their objectives in the field of soil-protection and -rehabilitation
Planning, design and implementation of biophysical soil protection measures and mulch systems at the farm level
Co-ordination of those involved in the implementation
Mobilization and facilitation of individual and group initiatives on soil conservation measures, and capacity building
Facilitation of participatory processes in the planning and implementation of soil protection measures in watershed management
Monitoring activities according to predefined formats and indicators.

For these tasks, the following qualifications are required:
First degree (Higher National Diploma or BSc) in a relevant discipline (Agriculture, Rural Development and NRM etc.)
At least 5 years of professional experience in the field of agriculture / rural development, and advising local organisations (user communities etc.) and / or local structures
At least 2 years experience in advising agricultural authorities and/or extension services
Leadership experience (especially in the context of group-based approaches) and team skills
In-depth expertise in the areas of soil protection, crop production; Access to and use of the means of production (e.g. IPM, organic and inorganic fertilization); Watershed management or similar
Expertise in tailoring biophysical soil conservation measures and mulching systems (eg Conservation Agriculture etc.) to the respective agro-ecological production systems would be an advantage
Expertise in physical and biological measures of erosion and soil fertility conservation
Fluent in English and Kiswahili
Experience in international and / or German development cooperation is beneficial.
